See the documentary Silent Fallout, a 2023 film with Japanese director Hideaki Ito and narrator Alec Baldwin. This English-language award-winning film contends our entire continent has been contaminated by radiation from 101 atmospheric nuclear tests, primarily in Nevada in the 1950s and the Marshall Islands from 1946 to 1958.

The movie promo says, “In the 1960s, milk was contaminated with radiation. … Women stood up and proved that their children were exposed.”

The promo continues, “using the teeth of infants living within a 150-mile radius of St. Louis,” researchers found levels of strontium 90 “as much as 50 times greater than (in) children born in 1950.” Eventually, President Kennedy stopped atmospheric nuclear testing. But that didn’t stop the dire effects.

Two KC-area screenings of this 76-minute documentary will be held, with the first on 4/4 at Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church, 9400 Pflumm, Lenexa, KS. (A similar story gives locations/times for the second screening, on 4/13.) Ann Suellentrop, vice chair of the PeaceWorks Board, will lead discussion after each film.
