Join the Kansas City Chapter of Veterans for Peace on 11/11 at 11. Well, they actually gather at Liberty Memorial, formerly called the National World War I Monument and Memorial, at 8 am at the entry to the monument. They put up a tent and gather as peace witnesses even though others may bring out a helicopter for display. At about 10:30 am or later, they begin sharing their views on preferring to call the day “Armistice Day” instead of “Veterans’ Day” to emphasize the peace that overcame war between Germany and the Allies on 11/11 at 11 am, in 1918.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as Armistice Day to celebrate the end of World War I and to honor the soldiers who died in service. Congress made it a legal holiday in 1938, a day “to be dedicated to the cause of world peace.”

In Kansas City, at 11 am, Theodore John, of the Vets for Peace, will ring the bell for peace that he made himself. Each year, PeaceWorks is invited to join the vets at this event and share reflections and hope.
