Charles Carney begins 273-mile walk in Kansas for peace, justice, ecology

Trumpeting a loud wake-up call about the catastrophic dangers of nuclear weapons and climate chaos, Charles Carney is walking 273 miles from McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita to the nuclear weapons plant operated by Honeywell in Kansas City, MO—the National Security Campus. The flier he is sharing with persons as he walks across Kansas, beginning on Aug. 10, shares the following ideas.

The ever-worsening climate crises and the current nuclear and ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) “modernization” programs increase the risks of nuclear annihilation. After the Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy said he estimated the odds of that crisis going to a nuclear war were between one in three and even more. Kennedy’s military advisors had previously estimated roughly 600 million deaths from such a war, a hundred holocausts. And that doesn’t count the nuclear winter that would likely result from thousands of firestorms like the World War II incineration of Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, and Hiroshima, lofting smoke into the stratosphere, where rain clouds seldom form. Recent simulations by leading climatologists suggest that temperatures at the surface of the earth would rarely get above freezing even in the summer for roughly 5 years. Daniel Ellsberg said that 98 or 99 percent of humanity would starve to death if they did not die of something else sooner. That would be almost 8 billion people, over a thousand holocausts.

But there is hope. Nuclear weapons are now illegal in the 55 countries that are parties to the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force on January 22 of this year.

What would you like to do to help promote this?

PeaceWorks Kansas City is asking people to ask their elected officials in Washington, DC, to support legislation mandating “no first use” of nuclear weapons (S.1148 / H.R.669) and using funds currently
earmarked for “modernizing” our ICBMs to develop a universal coronavirus vaccine and meet other purposes (S.982 / H.R.2227).  We are also asking city councils to join the ICAN (International Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) Cities Appeal and support their mayors in joining Mayors for Peace.  Longer-term, we need to strengthen international law so it becomes a more effective deterrent than Mutually Assured Destruction.
