The Doomsday Clock, set each year by The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, was reset Jan. 28 at 89 seconds to midnight, the closest it’s ever been to human extinction.
Why so close? Saying “global existential threats rage,” The Bulletin targets nuclear weapons, climate crisis, artificial intelligence, infectious diseases, and conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. See https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/. Note that the first danger The Bulletin lists is nuclear weapons. “The world depends on immediate action,” says The Bulletin.
PeaceWorks Kansas City asks you to help us implement locally the steps outlined by the group Back from the Brink—steps to prevent nuclear war:
—Actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals,
—Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first,
—Ending the sole, unchecked authority of any U.S. President to launch a nuclear attack,
—Taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert, and
—Cancelling the plan to replace the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.
Contact PeaceWorks KC’s Treasurer Dave Pack, at djpack.12645@gmail.com, to meet with local federal and city legislators to push for implementation of the Back from the Brink objectives. Thank you!
