PeaceWorks KC has joined a growing movement of politicians, community leaders, organizations, and individuals to sign the Pledge to Protect and Resist the Trump agenda. This brief but powerful pledge is:
“I PLEDGE to show up to protect the rights, safety and dignity of people in my community and resist Trump’s antidemocratic and immoral agenda consistent with the principles of nonviolence.”
This movement is a project of the organization Showing up for Racial Justice (SURJ). Here is how they describe the motivation for the pledge:
We are in immensely challenging times where the Trump administration is working to enrich and empower corporations and billionaires at the expense of millions of working people. However, history shows us that autocrats are always weaker than they appear, and we are often stronger than we might think, (Maria Stefan, “How we can meet the challenges of authoritarianism.”) and that the collective power of the people is the key to undermining and toppling authoritarian agendas. When key institutions, leaders, and individuals band together, actively resist, and refuse to fall in line with antidemocratic and immoral acts – we can stop key parts of an authoritarian agenda from advancing.
PeaceWorks KC joins a growing list of 45 politicians, 20 community faith leaders, 11 organizations, and almost 8000 individuals in signing the pledge. These include the mayor of Tacoma, WA Anders Ibsen, Pennsylvania House of Representative Chris Rabb, the mayor of University City, MO Terry Crow, mayor of Clayton, MO Michelle Harris, 11 other local politicians in greater St. Louis, MO, and many more.
If you or your organization are also ready and committed to signing the Pledge to Protect and Resist, we are ready for you to join us! There is a separate pledge for organizations and leaders and a pledge for individuals.
Together we can stand up to the immoral Trump agenda!
