Take part in Rally, Die-in, Civil Resistance to seek nuke-free world

By Jane Stoever

PeaceWorks-KC is holding its 9th annual witness for a nuclear-weapon-free world on Monday, May 28, Memorial Day. Why on Memorial Day? Because we are painfully aware that more than 154 persons died from the toxins at Bannister Federal Complex, where nuclear weapon parts were made from 1949 to 2014. Our witness begins this year at the closed entry to the complex and ends at the new plant, the National Security Campus (NSC), at 14510 Botts Rd. Join us at 9:45 am or 11 am!

Henry Stoever, chair of the PeaceWorks-KC Board of Directors, plans to do civil resistance for the third time, crossing the property line at the new plant to call for a nuke-free world. “The world is in ever greater peril of a nuclear exchange or the use of one or more nuclear weapons than in the past,” he says. He also highlights the international recognition that the world is “on the cusp of a new (nuclear) arms race,” according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Trump Administration’s proposed budget for 2019 would escalate funding for the National Security Campus from $530 million this year to almost $800 million next year. “While the ongoing production and assembly of nuclear weapons may be termed as simply replacement of parts and extending the life of current nuclear weapons, we know that the parts are in fact creating more deadly and dangerous weapons, for the new parts are an upgrade and improvement in the weaponry. It is a violation of Treaties to create new (nuclear) weapons,” says Stoever.
